A luxuriant destination, with infinite forests and sinuous rivers folwing towards the ocean. Madre de Dios is a department where there is plentiful of life in every corner. Puerto Maldonado, the capital city, is a necessary step to enter a few national parks and reserves of the area. It has been, during different periods, an important rubber, wood, gold and oil exploitation center.

Know your route

Travel itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Mollepata (Marcoccasa) – Soraypampa

We will leave Cusco very early, to head for Mollepata (3,000 m/9,843 f), and after a short walk, we will arrive at Marcoccasa (3,400 m / 11,154 f), where we will meet the staff and horses.
We will begin walking through a magnificent valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains: Humantay (5,217 m/ 17,116 f) and Salkantay (6,264 m/20,551 f). On that day, we will camp at Soraypampa (3,700 m/ 12,139 f). Climate: cold / Duration of the hike: 6 hours

Day 2: Soraypampa – Paso Salkantay- Challway

After breakfast, we will set out for the Salkantay pass (4,600 m/ 15,092 f), that offers an outstanding view of the snow-capped Salkantay (6,264 m). We will go down the valley to enjoy the vegetation and the environment. We will camp at Challway (2,000 m/ 9,842 f).
Climate: warm with mosquitos / Duration of the hike: 8-9 hours

Day 3: Challway – Wiñaypoco – La Playa

That day will be different, since we will walk in the middle of the forest, and appreciate the flora of the region and the plantations. We will descend to a clouded forest, with a lot of different species of orchids, bromelias, and a lot of other plants. We will see coffee, cocoa and fruits, which are characteristic plantations of the jungle border area. We will visit local families of Wiñaypoco (2,650 m/ 8,694 f) and La Playa (2,100 m/ 6,890 f) and will camp at La Playa.
Climate: warm during the day with mosquitos / Duration of the hike: 6 hours
Note: In accordance with the group wishes, it is possible to change the itinerary and visit the Santa Teresa thermal springs (1,830 m/ 6,004 f)

Day 4: La Playa – Llactapata – Aguas Calientes

Early in the morning, our trip will lead us to the Llactapata archaeological complex (2,650 m/ 8,694 f), located in the middle of a lush vegetation. From there, we will have a great view of the Machu Picchu mountain. We will continue as far as the hydroelectric power station (1,950 m/ 6,398 f) to take the train to Aguas Calientes (2,050 m/ 6,726 f), where we will spend the night in a hotel.
Climate: warm, with a few insects / Duration of the hike: 6 hours

Day 5: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

On that day, we will leave very early after breakfast (5:30 a.m.) and will go up to the Machu Picchu (2,400 m/ 7,874 f) by bus. After a guided tour through the important places of the fortress, we will have time to wander on the site. We will then go down to Aguas Calientes to have lunch (not included), and will have time to visit the hot baths of the village. At a convenient time, we will take the train back to Cusco. Transfer to your hotel.
